PITTAS WORLD

Number of pitta species seen: (Full-set-Nirvana = 32)

Visit The Hall of Fame to find out which pittas were seen where during the mission

The most beautiful genus of birds in the known universe... It’s little wonder that pittas were originally known in many parts of Asia as ‘Jewel-thrushes.’ Many species are gorgeously coloured, and when they finally allow themselves to be glimpsed in their forest home, literally glow like jewels in the gloom. More often heard than seen, many species are highly elusive, and require a finely honed set of stalking skills to allow even the briefest of views.

Over the coming months, (starting Feb 1st 2009,) pittasworld.com will play host to an attempt to see all these denizens of the forest in a single year, with full breathless details of the mission to be documented in the forthcoming book “The Jewel-thrush Diaries.”
